// Baloji
Born in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo in 1978, Baloji moved to Belgium with his father when he was four years old and grew up in Liège. He joined the rap group Les Malfrats Linguistiques (later called Starflam) as a teenager. They released three albums, including Survivant, which became a platinum disc in Belgium. In 2005 he made contact with his mother in DRC, and they spoke for the first time in 25 years. This led to his debut solo album Hotel Impala (2007), which he describes as a response to her question “what have you been doing all this time?” In 2008 Baloji travelled to Kinshasa to record an African re-reading of that album, released as Kinshasa Succursale in 2010. The album, featuring Zaiko Langa Langa, Konono No. 1, La Grace choir, Amp Fiddler and La Confiance fanfare, combines Congolese soukous with a 60s soul vibe and hip hop lyrics. Only natural for an artist who cites Tabu Ley, Dr Nico and Franco as his favourites right alongside Jacques Brel, Curtis Mayfield and Jay-Z. // VIDEOS
